Obituary of Leona Cotter Hersom
Leona Cotter Hersom, born on May 4, 1938, in Winters, Texas, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2024, in Cleburne, Texas. She was the cherished daughter of James Daniel Cotter and Audrey Brooks Shahan Cotter.
Tragically, Leona’s mother, Audrey, passed away when Leona was only six weeks old. Her father entrusted her upbringing to her aunt, Ethel Tennessee Averitt. Raised alongside Ethel’s daughter, Juanita B. Sanders, the two grew up as sisters and shared a lifelong bond.
Leona was preceded in death by her husband, J.W. Hersom, in 1996 and her daughter, Mary Ann O'Daniel, in 1963. She is fondly remembered by her children: sons Richard Wayne O'Daniel and his wife Bobbie and Dusty Lane O'Daniel; daughters Jamie Lynn Cassidy and her husband David and Leona Louise "Christina" Ghering and her fiancé Stoney. Her legacy extends through her beloved 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Leona’s life was defined by the love she showered upon her family and the joy she brought to those fortunate enough to know her. She had a passion for reading, cooking, and celebrating birthdays with those she held dear. Among the many fond memories she leaves behind are the fun-filled moments spent making videos with her granddaughters Rory and Karly and the delight of her famous peanut butter cookies that will forever be missed.
Her memory will remain a source of comfort and inspiration for all who knew her. May Leona’s legacy of love continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Martin Thompson & Son Funeral Home in Fort Worth, Texas on Friday, January 3, 2025 at 11:00 a.m.
