Aunt Judy was my dad's older and only sister. When I was about 9, we visited her house and she had the most amazing doll house I had ever seen. She had all of these little details like rugs, books, and towels that made it very real and I found out she had made many of the items herself. I became fascinated by doll houses and when I received a kit to build one for Christmas one year, I was ecstatic. Aunt Judy knew I had the doll house and she sent me several items for it that she had made including some books (of course), towels, a rug, and some lamps. Its been almost 40 years and I still remember how kind it was of her to send those items to me and how cool they were.

Judy was my room mate in library school. We shared a duplex apartment near campus. I introduced her to one of the three guys who lived in the other apartment. His name was John Hostetter. The rest is history. Judy came from a family who enjoyed science. I think her father and brothers were engineers (not sure) We enjoyed discussing science, music and favorite books. We both liked the name "Susan" as a name for one of our future baby girls and that came to be. Judy married John right after school and I only saw her twice in person after that. I think about her often, especially when some science topic comes up. Those who have ever known her will feel the earth is a less happy place without her..

While I didn't know Judy very well, I do know her daughter Susie. I can say without a doubt that Judy must of been one very special lady, because she has raised a compassionate, loving thoughtful and kind daughter. Who has become a good friend and neighbor.

This is Conall her grandson. When I was a kid I remember always bragging to classmates and adults that my Grandmother was the coolest because she watched the science fiction channel with me. To be honest I still brag about that. It was a great comfort to me to spend quiet time with her in her apartment, chatting, watching shows together, or enjoying her animals. She offered a great escape and I would hang out with her when there was too much commotion in other parts of the house or in life in general. While making coffee, sitting in big comfy chairs, or enjoying the patio we would have conversations about politics, scientific discoveries, space travel, and what we imagined the future would hold for humanity. Her love of books and learning are qualities that I admire. However I still laugh to myself when I remember how she told me she not only enjoys the content of books but also the smell of books and to be surrounded by them. A true librarian. I miss her greatly and take some solace in that she met her personal goal of reaching the age of 80 and seeing the year 2020. Thank you for all of your love and support Grandma. You will be greatly missed.
