Chief Steele lived an incredible life. He was from the "Greatest Generation" where some of the bravest heroes in our country emerged. In the 1970's, we were allowed to join Southlake Volunteer FD at the age of 15. I remember hanging around the fire station and listening to Chief Steele tell stories about his service in WWII. No man should have lived to tell about some of the things that he survived.
An earthquake in Australia, Captaining a landing craft at Guadalcanal, Red Beach 1st wave, back and fourth to the ship until all soldiers were on the beach. After his last delivery he chased his mother ship for over 20 miles out to sea until he was told that they had to go back to Guadalcanal and fight the enemy. Chief Steele and his crew were placed in foxholes on the beach and told to shoot anything that moves. Hand-to-hand combat between American and Japanese soldiers was going on all around him. You must remember that these were Navy men and not combat soldiers trained for that type of thing.
Going out in those same landing crafts to drop depth charges on German subs. These landing crafts were to slow and not designed for this type of mission. They kept blowing the back end of their own boats off. On one particular day 5 boats went out but only two survived. His boat was one of the two that survived. He was towing the second boat back when he saw a torpedo coming at them. He turned his boat and the torpedo went directly between the two boats.
And lastly there is the infamous coconut log story! Chief Steele would always say, "I wonder if that Japanese soldier at the other end of the coconut log is still alive and remembers me".
His sense of humor was incredible especially when it was about his time in WWII. I remember coming back across the lake one day in the fireboat. Chief Steele was driving, when all of a sudden he started zig-zagging all of the place yelling "torpedo to starboard, torpedo to port".
Chief Steele was an incredible mentor and prided himself on how many of his Volunteer firefighters from the 70's had gone on to become professional firefighters. The last count I had heard was well over 30. Many of them have retired now and some of them have passed away. If there is a FD in heaven I am sure God will make him Fire Chief and the official uniform will be those coveralls that he wore. I am proud to have known you, served under you, and letting me be apart of your's and Chrystal's life.

Beloved Uncle Bob is now with his sweetheart Crystal. His wit and humor lit up every conversation we had. Yet, his tender caring heart helped our family through many moments too. Eternaly loved by Debbie Scarry and Family, Beth Heimsoth and Family as well as by his "Little Bit" sister, Elizabeth Cox and family.
