After high school, Dick attended four semesters of Allegheny College before enlisting in the Air Force in 1957. While in the Air Force, Dick met the love his life Nancy DeHaas. They married on September 19, 1959.  After discharge in 1961, he put the technical skills he gained in the Air Force to work in the private sector. This work sent him all around the world, to include West Berlin, England, and the Philippines. He enjoyed the travel and sightseeing with Nancy. In 1969, while living in New Mexico, Dick and Nancy decided to extend their family by adopting Kevin.

While working for General Dynamics, Dick and his family moved to Ft. Worth in June of 1972. Although General Dynamics was bought out by Lockheed, Dick continued with the company until his retirement in 1997 after 32 years. During his life, he was an active member of the Hemphill Heights Masonic Lodge, the Longhorn Council of the Boy Scouts of America and held many positions within his various church families, particularly at St. Luke Cumberland Church (now Lifeline). Dick enjoyed fishing, hunting, and BBQ-ing with family and friends. He particularly enjoyed fishing with Kevin and, of course, always catching the biggest fish.

Dick was predeceased by his parents; brothers, James, and Thomas; and grandparents.

He is survived by wife, Nancy; and son, Kevin Lander (Tammy) of Florida.
