Prof. Boring was a wonderful, wonderful writer and biblical scholar. I've benefited from his writings over many years. Once, I had the chance to meet him in Leuven (Belgium) and was able to thank him personally. He will be happy in the Lord!

Gene Boring was a brilliant scholar and a luminous human being. His biblical commentaries are carved in oak and will serve the academy and the church well for generations to come. He and I always joked that we should write a book together, so that the spine would read "Long and Boring"! A few years ago, I did write the foreword to one of his books, so, in a way, we got our wish. He will be deeply missed. Tom Long

Gene Boring was a great theologian and a wonderful person; we are proud having met him. He loved Germany and especially Göttingen; there we met him first in 1979, when he stayed there for some months at University. We remember our meetings in Göttingen, Hahausen, Fort Worth, Großenbuch and Süpplingenburg; it was always great! He was one of the rare American theologians who also knows the European and especially the German tradition. The photo shows Karen and Gene Boring and Udo Schnelle in Großenbuch near Erlangen (1994).

Gene and I were classmates at Johnson Bible College in 1954-57, and we remained life-long friends. Our lives crossed paths many time at church and academic occasions. Gene was very debonaire, even as a student, with his good looks, brilliance, confidence, and camera around his neck. All that in a teenager from Maryville, Tennessee!
I have several fond memories. One is your family visit by car from Gottingen to Cambridge when we were both on sabbatical. Gene and I took the children punting on the Cam River. I slipped on the punt into the river fully clothed. When I surfaced, Gene was laughing. He told me that he didn’t know whether to take my picture in the water or help me get out. Fortunately, he helped me back into the punt. Then we visited you in Gottingen for a pleasant visit. I remember a somber trip to see the fences, no man’s land, and guard towers at the ‘Wall’ not too far from Gottingen.
Gene sent several of the draft manuscripts of his books for comments, and I and many others learned from his brilliant and extensive scholarship.
Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Grace and peace!

My first reaction to seeing Eugene had passed away was, "oh no!" So many memories flooded back. We knew each other as very young children at the First Christian Church in Maryville, Tennessee. Our lives were spent in many Church activities over all the years. We formed a quartet of his sister, Bonny Sue, my cousin, Ken, Eugene and I. We sang over much of East Tennessee at our churches for Singspirations and the like. Then Gene took the wedding pictures when Paul and I were married. I treasure them to this day. We lost track of each other after Gene and Paul graduated in 1957 from JBC, along with David Eubanks, who also was a FCC member. All of us were inspired by Dean Floyd Clark who was also the minister of our church all those years. Our circle goes smaller, but memories never die. Karen, my heart goes out to you and your family, but know he will never be forgotten.

Karen, Bonnie, Brad, Beth and families - I hold you in my thoughts and prayers as you celebrate the life and mourn the death of wonderful man who was always "Dr. Boring" to me. I have fond memories of each of you from our time in Enid, from teaching Beth in the 4 or 5 year old Sunday School class to all our intersections at Phillips and Central Christian. I will never forget Dr. Boring's kindness, encouragement, scholarship and faith. He continues to be an important person in my life. Peggy McClanahan

Dr. Boring was my teacher at what was then the Graduate Seminary of Phillips University. Through the years he continued to teach me and encourage me in the translation of the New Testament. In the past year he has guided me--occasionally telling me where to look but never telling me what to find--and encouraged me in a current writing project he said was much needed in response to "the contemporary liberal mainline's abandonment of atonement language rather than interpreting it." I am grateful for his influence and for his friendship.

I am grateful to have known Gene and to have many conversations with him, especially questions about the New Testament. He helped to to better understand the Gospel of Mark. Hyacinth and I extend our sympathy to his wife Karen, and the rest of his family.

It was always a good day when I would see Gene walking the neighborhood. He walked with such determination to get his steps in. He out-walked me on many occasions because he remained focused, unwavering and rarely got off course. This brings to mind the spiritual walk we should have with The Lord Jesus Christ. Thank you Gene for setting that example. I'm sure you are walking the streets of Heaven discovering new neighborhoods with Jesus. You will be missed. 2 Corinthian 5:8 We are confident, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord

Mr. Boring created a loving family that was cherished by the residents of Enid, Oklahoma, which is where I met them. This kind, soft-spoken man always had a smile to offer, much like his children do to this day. Neighborhood kids, like me, never called him Dr., he was Mr. Boring, or Bonnie’s Dad, and he was much to humble to ever correct us! I have known his daughter, Bonnie, since 2nd grade. Proud Taft Tigers we were, and today in our mid-60’s I count her as one of my very best friends, true confidants. She adores her parents and talks of them often, Mom and Dad, almost as one entity, as the two were so entrenched in love and respect. It did not escape Bonnie that she won the lottery when it came to her parents. Over the years everyone I knew was envious of the strong familial bond this entire family built, headed by their patriarch, the ‘leader of the band.’
