Please share a memory of Dr. Richard to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Dr. Richard E. Smith passed away on May 25, 2024, greeted by the gates of Heaven. Hailing from New Jersey, he left an indelible mark on the world. A distinguished alumnus of MIT and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, he distinguished himself as a board-certified internist/oncologist, pioneering the first oncology clinic outside Baltimore. Richard's accolades include being listed in the Maryland Blue Book's Who’s Who in the East, Marquis Who’s Who in the World, and the International Register of Profiles Men of Achievement. He also made significant contributions to chemotherapy and breast cancer research.

Beyond medicine, Richard harbored a profound passion for golf, boasting an impressive six aces and securing numerous championship titles. Sundays often found him immersed in televised golf tournaments. He was equally devoted to the pursuit of knowledge, being an avid reader.

Known for his kindness and dedication, Richard extended his care beyond the confines of his office, making house calls and attending to his patients in hospitals. Even today, several patients fondly remember his compassionate care. His wife, Jan, was his steadfast companion, working alongside him at the clinic he founded.

Richard leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion to his family. He is survived by his wife, Jan, daughters Stacy and Sheridan, son John and daughter-in-law Dana. His life was enriched by six grandchildren: Maguire and Maclaine Smith, Danielle Sprecher, Annie Smith, Jenna Rockwell, and Brandon Rice, as well as his great-grandson, Emmett Sprecher. He is also survived by his sister, Ellen Condello, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Richard’s gentle voice and boundless compassion touched everyone he encountered. He was the unwavering pillar of his family, offering solace and support without judgment. His memory will be cherished and revered.

After practicing medicine in Hagerstown, Maryland, where he garnered immense respect and admiration from the community, Richard retired to Hilton Head, South Carolina. However, the allure of grandchildren drew him to Texas, a decision he never regretted. He once told his wife, "We are headed west."

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Anna Smith, his brother, Laird Smith, and his son, Evan Smith.

A Celebration of Life in honor of Richard will take place on Sunday, June 23, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth, located at 800 W 5th Street.
