Dorothy was born in Ranger, TX to Linnie Marie and Boyd Nail on August 9, 1941. She went to school in several states as the family moved eventually earning her GED. Dorothy went on to earn her Cosmetology certificate and worked for close to 30 years as a beautician owning 2 separate businesses along the way.
