I met Mike back in January 2006 when I started working for Archon Group. I was new to Texas and new to the company but Mike made me feel right at home, and our work relationship blossomed into a true friendship over the past 16 years. The man was a report developing machine, people. He could run circles around the others and we leaned on him heavy the entire time we worked together, but in the end you just knew Mike could do the work and he would have it done correctly and on time too. He had a great work ethic.
Mike and I went out to lunch just about every day of the week, and we enjoyed talking about our families, music, sports, and eating and making BBQ to name few. The first time we hung out outside of work, was so that Mike could school me on what good Texas BBQ, and so we went to Ft. Worth and ate beef brisket and jalapeño sausage. A friendship bonded by BBQ.
Two funny stories I want to share.....I had purchased a USB turntable so that I could record my albums and enjoy them digitally, and when Mike learned that I was doing this, he asked me if I could record a few of his old albums. Sure thing buddy. I remember giggling when he brought me the albums: Alice Cooper, ZZ Top, Black Oak Arkansas and Journey to name a few. I didn't really know what to expect on his musical tastes, so it was just funny to learn that he liked older rock music. I also learned that Mike used to be a very good golfer. I can remember a few people telling me about when he showed up to play golf for a company outing of sorts, and he showed up with his old school golf bag of clubs and woods, and everyone thought he would do poorly, but they quickly learned that he was still very good and gave everyone a run for their money that day.
Mike enjoyed playing his flight simulator PC game and he would send me text messages with pictures of various airports or skyline scenery. He was a true family man. He talked about Anne, Megan and Kevin all of the time and you could tell that he loved them dearly and that they were is world. He loved becoming a grandfather too and he would share funny stories and pictures of the grandkids all of the time.
The last time I saw Mike was Thanksgiving morning in 2018 and he came over to my house and I fried him a turkey and we sat together and talked and joked and just enjoyed each others company. I moved to east TN about a year later but Mike and I always kept in touch via text.
I know you are in a much better place now, and you are not suffering anymore, but that does not make the grieving process any easier, buddy. I am going to miss you dearly Mike.
