Mr. Boley was my Whiz Quiz coach and teacher in 8th grade. I have thought about him and the time he put in with us kids, often. Im glad to see he married Nurse Scott-we all wanted him to back then. He was one of the teachers that surely changed many kids lives and will live in the memories of all that had the good fortune of having him as a teacher/mentor.

One of my favorite memories of him was when he was my 8th grade Geometry Teacher. He loved talking to us about his day and joking around with us and it was always fun to hear his jokes. The class of 2023 will miss him.

When I heard the news about Mr. Boley's passing, there were so many memories that came to mind. I remembered the countless hours he spent with us building Future City models, the conversations we had while driving us to Mathcounts competitions, and the jokes he made throughout Whiz Quiz practices. Mr. Boley was incredibly dedicated to his students, and there is no doubt that he played a huge role in shaping my interests. I know that Mr. Boley touched the lives of so many of us. Even after leaving McLean, I was always excited to come back and visit Boley, and while I am sad that I will never get to again hear one of his sarcastic jokes, I can still hear his laughter in my mind. To a great teacher, and an even greater person. You will be missed.

Mr. Boley was a unique & funny teacher who taught me to take school seriously. He encouraged us to question everything, and be passionate about our learning. I enjoyed having him as a geometry teacher and as a Wiz Quiz coach. He is one of the teachers I will never forget. Prayers for his family.

Future City coach, Whiz Quiz coach, Math Counts coach - Ron meant a lot to a lot of young people. Always putting in extra time to make opportunities available for those wanting to pursue them. Being around Ron during the years he mentored my kids through the various competitions and in the classroom was an honor and a privilege and really quite an enjoyable experience. We spent many hours together building Future City models, watching Whiz Quiz matches or a Mathcounts match. He had a dry sense of humor and often had me laughing with his anecdotes about crazy interactions with students. Who else would teach you what happened to water when you flushed the toilet? To this day, my kids can both tell you how magnetic levitation trains work. Ron is gone, but his memory will live in the lives and hearts of the countless students he touched. I have included a photo of just one of the many Future Cities teams Ron took to Nationals in Washington D.C. It is a reminder of the legacy a person who cares can leave behind. Ron will be missed, but will also be remembered.

He will be missed. There are no words to describe this heartbreaking loss. I hope everyone remembers how wonderful Mr.Boley was. He was a great mentor and so many students enjoyed his “college readiness” jokes and sense of humor. Boley would go out of his way to help students foster a love for extracurricular competitive academics. He would spend hours devoted to his students outside of class and it was never an inconvenience for him because being of service was in his nature. Boley always recognized the strengths in people. He was most impressed by his wife and would say “Liz is so strong.” He knew the strengths of his students and would build them up. I remember him loving sand volleyball and always diving for the ball even if that meant a scraped knee a time or two. He would rescue all the feral kitties in his neighborhood and they knew just the house to go to when they needed help. Boley would go rollie pollie hunting in August and would be so proud with how many he had found. He knew more about the US Presidents than anyone I’ve ever met. He could do any math in his head in record speed unless it was counting by 10’s in which case he was always below the number and never above. Boley would spend hours every year writing recommendation letters for students and every time former students would visit the campus their first question was always, “Is Mr.Boley in his room?” At the end of the year my students would write letters to their teachers and Boley always had a BOX of “thank you” letters while the rest of us just had a little stack. I always knew to put out a box for Boley’s letters. He liked to talk about civil engineering, the army and what the Whiz Quiz season was going to look like. Technology confused him but he tried his best to figure out the Sims City game. If you ever needed a stack of McDonald’s applications he was your go to (just kidding- but the students would know). I will miss him passing by when he “checked his tires“, the black box being delivered on Wednesdays and him leaving behind two stacked chairs in his wake. Boley was one of a kind and will never be forgotten.
