Doris Mae Duke Edwards went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, May 26, 2020. She was born in Rosebud, Texas, on February 26, 1938, to the parentage of the late Ida B. Campbell and Owen Duke.
Services: A visitation will begin at 10 a.m. with a service starting at 11 a.m. Monday, June 1, 2020 at Cathedral of Faith, 3500 House Anderson Rd., Euless, TX 76040.
Interment: 2 p.m. Monday, June 1, 2020 at Dallas - Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Pkwy., Dallas, TX 75211.
Doris was the eldest of her mother's six children. She was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend, who was alternately known as “Dottie, Momma, and Grandmother.”
She accepted Christ at an early age where she was a member of St. James AME in Denton, Texas. As an adult, Doris attended and participated in programs at Corinth Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas.
Doris attended Fred Moore High School in Denton, Texas. She was secretary of the student council and a member of the home economics department and the choir. During her senior year, she was named “Miss Bronze Texas of 1955” during Negro Achievement Day celebration at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas.
After graduation from Fred Moore, Doris attended a secretarial school and worked as a legal secretary in Fort Worth, Texas for Fred J. Finch, Jr. He was a prominent civil rights leader, attorney, and newspaper publisher.
In 1957, she met Vernon V. Edwards and they became husband and wife on October 18, 1958. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Debra, and Cynthia and one son, Vernon II. Doris’ children were her most cherished blessings.
Doris earned her teacher certification by participating in Texas Christian University's "Follow Through Program." She served as a teacher for the Fort Worth Independent School District from 1975 until her retirement in 2004. She was president of the State of Texas PTA. Doris loved teaching and her students, and was always willing to help others.
She dedicated her life to her husband, family and students. Doris was a creative, intelligent, warm and beautiful person with a sharp wit and a beautiful spirit.
Those remaining to cherish her wonderful memories are her dedicated husband, Vernon V. Edwards, Sr.; loving and devoted children, Debra L. Board (Michael), Vernon V. Edwards II, Cynthia Y. Edwards (Gregory Singleton); grandchildren, Allan Quinones-Board, Amber Board, Megan Board and Dakota Board, (Buntu Banti); three great grandchildren; two brothers: Alfred A. Hall (Annie) and Willie Ray Hall (Mary Carlton); three sisters: Luci Lee Hall Pollard, Bobbie Jean Hall Cunningham, and Abbie Dee Hall Patterson; six step sisters and brothers: Donald Haynes, Wanda Haynes-Gindratt, Edward Hall, Sr. (Bridgette), Rozena Hall Del Mar (Sanford Del Mar), Althea Hall Stewart (Larry Stewart), and Jo Ann Hall; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and other close relatives.
