I remember Mike as a soft-spoken, thoughtful conversationalist. We first met because our parents knew each other through our connection to the same church and because of Rice--I recall hours of conversation one time as his parents drove us back to Houston after one school break--interrupted only by a flat tire that he was the first to notice. We somehow managed to stay in infrequent contact over the years, although we only saw each other once after graduation, when he came to Washington to learn about log houses and we had a good conversation over Pacific NW Mexican food. We started a new phase in the conversation in the last year or so--he seemed upbeat, and it was clear that he treasured you, his family and friends. He was a good man.

Dear Sarah,
Bruce joins me in sending you and Rachel and Loren our deepest sympathy for your recent loss of Michael. We hold you all and the extended family in our hearts, thoughts, and prayers.
May your many wonderful memories of Michael bring you sharing time and comfort. May your mutual love for him and each other being you strength in the face of your grief. And, finally, may the knowledge that he is free from all suffering and sickness in the loving embrace of dear ones who passed before him and that of Our Heavenly Father bring each of you peace.
Remembering our younger fun days at Calvary together with a smile and sending you our deepest sympathy with biggest hugs, Sally Hillenbrand

Mike and I were freshman year roommates at Rice and have been friends ever since. At the time, he was an early riser and helpfully "kicked me out of bed" to make my 8AM class across campus. Mike would shove a mug of coffee under my nose and turn on Bach's "Wachet Auf" Somehow, he managed to dodge my thrown objects. I always treasured seeing Mike, Sarah, Rachael and Loren when our "Northern Refugees" from Rice would get together. Aside from his unfailing good cheer, perhaps what I will remember most is Mike's ability to bring an often unusual, but always apt insight to any discussion. His warmth of heart and ready smile will be missed.

My family cherishes the many Memorial Day Rice gatherings held in NY, PA and NJ across the years where spouses
and children got to know the Rice Alum's who lived in the NE who had stayed in touch since their days at Weiss College.
