Obituary of Shirley Carole Green
Shirley Carole Arnold was born on February 1, 1935 to her parents, Mildred Franklin Yung and Harry Jackson Arnold, in Waco, Texas, and entered her eternal home with God on November 26, 2019. Upon graduation from Incarnate Word High School in San Antonio, she was accepted to Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, majoring in pre-med, and as a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority.
Shirley went to work for Acme Brick, where she met William Howard Green. They were married on February 17, 1956, at University Christian Church, Fort Worth. They traveled to Mineral Wells for their honeymoon at the Baker Hotel for $38.00 a night! Together, they built a home in Fort Worth and began their family with daughter, Pamela Sue Green, and son, William Lloyd Green. In 1967, Howard was transferred to Kansas City, Kansas, then to Beaumont, Texas, where their social life soared with deep friendships. During the early years, Shirley was a loving wife and mother. In 1972, she developed a career at Casual Corner in retail sales. She must have spent her whole paycheck at Casual Corner, because in high school Pam never wore anything twice!
In 1976, they were transferred to Houston, where Shirley continued at Casual Corner. When Casual Corner closed, Shirley went to work for Hydro Services in Missouri City. After Howard’s retirement from Acme Brick, Shirley also retired, and they returned to Fort Worth in 1998.
Shirley was an active member of Alpha Delta Pi TCU alumnae; The Quinq Club of TCU; Daughters of the Republic, Frances Cooke Van Zandt Chapter; South Hills Christian Church Women’s Group; and an exercise group. She was a member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) her whole life, participating in camp & conferences as a youth, women’s ministries, and attending the church wherever her daughter was serving.
Shirley loved her family, especially her niece and her grandchildren. She was proud of who they were and supported every single thing they did. She liked to travel, sew, entertain, craft, cook and was a cake baker extraordinaire. She was always a gracious hostess for family and friends.
In July of 1999, Shirley was diagnosed with lung cancer. She never believed she was seriously ill. Determined to survive even through the intense radiation and chemotherapy, she did! This past July, she celebrated being a 20 year lung cancer survivor.
In May of 2019, Shirley began fighting health issues again when COPD, Diabetes, Heart Failure and Kidney Failure came together to challenge her. She was hospitalized five times over the summer but still refused to believe she was seriously ill.
We thank all those who were such a source of comfort and support during her illness, especially the Rev. Zena McAdams, her neighbors, and caretakers from Home Instead Senior Care and Senior Care at Stonegate in Fort Worth.
