Obituary of Sydonia Katherine Sonnenburg

Sydonia K. Gilbert Sonnenburg was born May 7, 1930 in Austin, Texas to Sidney and Katherine Gilbert. She passed from this life on earth to the next in heaven on April 29, 2017 in her home in Fort Worth.

Memorial services will be held at Wedgwood  Baptist Church in Fort Worth at 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 3. Graveside services will be  that same day at 2:00 p.m. at Elmwood Memorial Park in Abilene. Arrangements are  with Martin Thompson and Son Funeral Home in Fort Worth.

Sydonia spent her childhood in various cities in Texas due to her father’s public  service in the Texas Highway Patrol. She graduated from Dallas Sunset High School  and attended North Texas State Teachers College (now University of North Texas) in  Denton.

Sydonia married Dale Lain on October 22, 1949. They were married for 27 years  and lived in Hamlin. Sydonia devoted her time to her husband, their son Gil, and the  family farm. Though Sydonia sometimes worked in retail sales and for a while  taught Home Economics at the high school, most of her time was devoted to her  family, helping on the farm, and teaching on Sundays in the Primary Department at  First Baptist Church in Hamlin. She was an excellent cook and seamstress and loved  to play bridge.

Sydonia married Ray Sonnenburg in November of 1979. She and Ray lived in Fort  Worth, worked at Stripling and Cox for over 20 years, and were active members of  Wedgwood Baptist Church for over 30 years. 

Sydonia is survived by her husband, Ray Sonnenburg of the home, Ray’s son, Ray Jr.  of Deer Park, Ray’s daughter, Fodie Powell and her husband, Sam of Abilene, and her son, Gil and his wife, Mary of Tyler. She is also survived by her 5 grandchildren, Ashley Randle of Abilene, Matthew Powell and his wife Bonnie of Abilene, Caleb Lain and his wife Lacy of Weatherford, Cody Lain and wife Elizabeth of El Dorado, Arkansas, and Krissie Garland and her husband Eric of Lufkin and 9 great grandchildren Chloe, Skylar, London, Autumn, Luke, Ellie, Sparrow, Joah and Selah.
