It was with heartfelt sadness that I learned of Bobby's passing. It was a privilege to have known him and I will always remember his cheerfulness, his quick wit, and great sense of humor. I met Bobby 35 years ago soon after becoming friends with his daughter, Phyllis. I met Phyllis at the bus stop when we were 12 years old. We were both new to the neighborhood, and what started out as awkward strangers quickly developed into a deep, irreplaceable friendship that has stood the test of time. During those years as neighbors, I have many wonderful memories of time spent with Bobby and Lela. Their home was a safe haven filled with warmth and acceptance. They both shared a gift for hospitality. The genuine adoration Bobby and Lela showed one another and their devotion and commitment to their family were qualities I have always loved and admired. They worked hard for their family and they helped each other in all things from creating unforgettable cookouts to keeping family traditions. I will never forget those early years- the emotional connections made, the life lessons learned, the sleepovers, the summers at the waterpark, the campouts at the lake, and all of those weekends Bobby tirelessly chauffeured us back and forth to the skating rink, Putt-Putt, and bowling alley. Bobby made us laugh everyday and he always made me feel so much at home every time that I visited. We had so many good times. The enduring effect that he had on his family and the world around him is beyond measure. Bobby will always have a special place in my heart and in my memories as does all of his family. He was a huge part of the best years of my life that will never be forgotten as they were some of my favorites. My love and admiration for Bobby will last all the days of my life. No person or experience will ever replace those happy days and I will always think of Bobby with fondness and gratitude. His passing will be mourned by so many who loved him so much. He made the world a better place, but Heaven is now all the greater now that he is there. I'm sure there was quite the homecoming in Heaven once Bobby arrived.
Lela, I hope it will be of some comfort to know that you gave him all of the love and all of the care possible all the days of his life. Your family unity and resilience is truly an inspiration.
My love to all of you now and forever,
Jessica
